I feel that the documentary touched on the theme of difference due to the fact that most people in the world don't have the opportunity to build their own homes. The vast majority of us don't have the luxury of modeling our homes after a famous home or building. So the fact that they were able to achieve both places them in another category due to their wealth, but also creativeness as they wanted to do something against the norm,
